- Abrasion: This form of tooth wear is the result of contact of a tooth with a non-dental object such as a frisbee, tennis ball, bone, or antler, to name a few.
- Attrition: This is a form of tooth wear that is caused by contact of a tooth with another tooth, such as in a malocclusion.
Both forms of dental wear can manifest as a brown discoloration due to the gradual loss of enamel and dentin. In instances of slow and gradual dental wear, the tooth can maintain its health despite significant external misshaping. However, rapid wear may lead to pulp exposure, causing tooth necrosis and necessitating endodontic treatment or extraction.
